Break Your Subwoofer In

Much like the engine of a new automobile, a new subwoofer must go through a short but important process of “break-in” before it is run under harsh conditions. The “break-in” process will ensure the subwoofer is able to perform as it has been designed to. This process involves subjecting the subwoofer to no more than low-to-medium volume levels for a number of hours in the enclosure. 3-4 hours is generally sufficient for the subwoofer’s suspension to loosen enough to prevent the voice coil(s) from overheating and causing failure. The break-in period is also effective in extending subwoofer life. Over-driving the woofer before it has been properly broken-in will usually result in premature failure and poor performance.

Water Resistant

…But not water proof. There is a difference between the two. Since the MR101 lives near the water almost all the time, all of the major components such as the spider, surround etc. have been specially coated to have the protection that they need from corrosion that is present in a humid and salty environment.

Cone – Poly-Mica

The MR101 has a cone that is made up of both Polyurethane and Mica. Polyurethane is a resilient and durable manufactured material that can take the place of paint, cotton, rubber, metal or wood in thousands of applications across virtually all fields. Mica is a crystal formation that is found on rocks and can be commercially used in a variety of applications. It is chemically elastic, lightweight and resilient. Combined, these two finished materials can take the form of cones that are used for speakers and subwoofers, contributing to the overall performance and long-lasting qualities.

Voice Coil – High Temperature Aluminum

One of the most abundant elements on earth, Aluminum is remarkable for its low density and for its ability to resist corrosion. It is nonmagnetic (does not have any magnetic properties) and does not easily ignite. This solid material has the ability to perform under stress in both high tension and high compression environments. Aluminum is relatively soft making one of the more ideal materials to use in voice coils.

Surround – Butyl Rubber

Butyl Rubber is a synthetic (man made) rubber and is valued for its chemical inertness, impermeability to air and the ability to endure or resist exposure to the many types of weather fronts. Butyl rubber has many different applications. Anywhere from Sports equipment to automotive parts, the medical industry and more. We use them for the Surrounds that connect the cone to the basket. Did you know that most modern chewing gum uses food-grade butyl rubber as the central gum base, which contributes not only the gum’s elasticity but an obstinate, sticky quality? Just like that chewing gum, the Butyl Rubber Surround in our speakers can take the equivalent amount of abuse without quitting on you.
